A Graceful Swan and Cygnet in Pure Whites

Negative space is the secret weapon of the accomplished watercolour painter. Instead of painting the subject itself, you cleverly paint around it, letting the white of the paper become the swan.

This week's tender painting of a mother swan nuzzling her little cygnet is the absolutely perfect subject for practising this powerful technique. You'll learn restraint, careful planning, and the almost zen-like patience of knowing when NOT to paint.

We end the term with the ultimate watercolour skill, saying more with less. This week you'll paint a beautifully loose Aussie pelican using just a handful of bold, confident strokes.

We’ll add a whisper of soft grey and pink for the head, rich indigo shadows for the wings, and plenty of untouched white paper doing the real heavy lifting. It's the natural, satisfying culmination of everything you've learned this term. Loose, expressive, and wonderfully free. A perfect ending to the course, and the style you'll want to keep painting in forever.

Let the Paint Do the Work

We're starting the term the fun way, with loose, wobbly creatures that appear from a couple of well-placed blobs. You'll drop colour into wet paint and watch it bloom and mingle all by itself. It's the quickest way to fall in love with watercolour.

Chickens, dogs, cats, whatever takes your fancy. Nothing here needs to be neat, and the happy accidents are usually the best bit.

A Day at the Coast, in Paint

Today we head to the beach without leaving the studio. You'll lay down a big soft sky, then build up the sea, the sand and a scatter of birds along the horizon. Simple washes, beautiful results.

We'll show you how to keep the water looking wet and the sand looking warm. It's a calm, easy class and the finished piece looks like somewhere you'd rather be.

One Colour, Endless Range

Working in a single colour sounds limiting until you try it. You'll paint a moonlit sea using nothing but one blue, from the palest wash through to the deepest shadow. Suddenly you're thinking about tone instead of colour, and everything clicks.

This is the class people tell us changed the way they paint. Take the colour away and you learn to see light properly.

Sprinkle Salt, Watch What Happens

Scatter a pinch of salt onto a wet wash and it pushes the pigment aside, leaving little starbursts of texture behind. You'll use it for falling snow, weathered rock and moody winter skies. It genuinely feels like a magic trick.

We'll show you the timing, because salt on paint that's too wet or too dry behaves completely differently. Get it right and nothing else looks quite like it.

Let the Water Take the Lead

This week is about giving up a little control and letting the water carry the paint where it wants to go. You'll paint blossom spilling out of a round vase, working wet into wet so the colours melt together. Loose, fresh and full of movement.

The trick is knowing when to stop, and we'll help you spot that moment. Overwork it and you lose the very thing that makes it lovely.

Make the Darks Really Sing

Nothing lifts a painting like a proper dark sitting next to a clean white. You'll paint geese in flight, using a deep inky wash for the background and leaving the birds as untouched paper. It's called negative painting and it's enormously satisfying.

We'll help you mix darks that stay rich rather than turning muddy. The result is dramatic and looks far harder than it actually is.

Soft Edges That Melt Together

Blending is what gives watercolour its glow, and it comes down to timing and how much water is on your brush. You'll paint a cat in soft, melting patches of ginger, grey and white. Every edge either melts away or stays crisp, and you get to choose which.

We'll practise on scraps first so you get the feel for it. By the end you'll be blending without thinking about it.

Say More by Painting Less

The hardest thing in watercolour is knowing when to put the brush down. This week you'll paint a swan using barely any paint at all, letting the white of the paper do most of the work. A few careful strokes and the whole bird appears.

It takes a bit of nerve to leave that much space empty. Once you've done it, you'll never crowd a painting again.

Crisp, Confident and Clean

After weeks of soft washes, this one goes sharp. You'll paint a puffin with clean, deliberate edges, working on dry paper so every mark holds its shape. Crisp edges bring your subject forward and make it pop.

We'll look at where a hard edge helps and where it hurts. Used well, it's the difference between a painting that reads clearly and one that drifts.

Finish the Term with a Bang

We're ending the term in the messiest and most enjoyable way possible. You'll paint geese charging through water, then flick, splatter and spray to bring the whole thing to life. Aprons on, this one goes everywhere.
