Use a Mould to Create Stunning Sculptural Bowls

This week we work with moulds to create bowls with gorgeous flowing, organic shapes. And then we’ll add your own sculptural flair on top to make them truly special.

You'll press and drape clay over a form to capture that beautiful natural curve, then decide how to take it further: smooth and minimalist, perhaps, or adorned with a little creature like the frog in our inspiration piece above.

It's a brilliant technique that looks impressive but is surprisingly achievable, and you'll genuinely surprise yourself with how professional the result feels in your hands.

Take Your First Spin on the Pottery Wheel

No pottery term would be complete without some time at the wheel. This week you'll experience that unique feeling of centring clay and watching it rise between your hands. It's famously tricky and wonderfully, deeply rewarding when it clicks.

You'll be guided through all the basics — centring, opening up, pulling the walls — and whatever you end up with, wobbly or beautifully even, it'll feel like a little victory you earned yourself.

Bring Your Pieces to Life with Colour and Pattern

This is where your weeks of work truly transform. Glazing is the final, almost magical step where bare, unfinished clay becomes a beautiful ceramic piece with shine, depth, and real personality.

You'll explore a range of glaze techniques — brushwork, dipping, pattern-making, and combining multiple colours — so you can make thoughtful choices for each piece you've built this term.

It's a deeply satisfying afternoon of creative decoration, and you'll leave genuinely excited to see your finished pieces emerge from the kiln next week.

Make Absolutely Anything You Want

The whole term has been about building up your skills and your confidence, so this final week is your reward. Come in with a piece you've been secretly dreaming about. This may be an unfinished project you want to develop further, or a technique from earlier in the term you'd like to revisit.

The full studio is at your disposal and your teacher will be right there for guidance whenever you need it. No template, no prescribed project, no rules. Just you, the clay, and ten weeks of beautifully earned confidence behind you.

Start With a Ball of Clay and a Bit of Character

Every potter in history starts right here, pressing a thumb into a ball of clay and opening it out with slow, even pressure. It's the oldest technique there is and still one of the most satisfying. You'll learn how wall thickness, pressure and pace all shape what you end up with.

Then comes the fun part, turning that simple round form into something with real personality. The shaggy little fellow above got his mane from clay pushed through a mesh, and yours can go wherever your imagination takes it. No tools, no wheel, just your hands and the clay.

Build a Wall Piece With Real Texture

This week you'll roll out a slab and turn it into a hanging piece for your wall. The example above is a rockpool in relief, all barnacles, seaweed and little coral clusters built up by hand. Once it's glazed, the light catches every bump and hollow.

Your design is entirely your own, whether that's coastal, botanical or something completely abstract. You'll learn to roll an even slab, attach pieces so they stay attached, and build up depth without anything cracking. It's a lovely one to hang somewhere you'll see it every day.

Make the Mug You'll Use Every Morning

There's a particular pleasure in drinking your morning cuppa from a mug you built yourself. You'll roll a slab, wrap it into a cylinder, join the seam properly and set a base on it. Then comes the handle, which is where most people discover they're fussier than they thought.

You'll learn how to score and slip so nothing pops apart in the kiln, and how to shape a handle that actually feels right in the hand. Add a decorative touch if you fancy one, or keep it clean and simple. Either way, it's a piece you'll reach for daily.

Coil by Coil, Something Rather Beautiful

Rolling coils is oddly meditative, and stacking them into a pot is where the technique really shows off. You'll learn to roll them even, join them so they hold, and use the coils themselves as decoration rather than smoothing them away. Twists, spirals and braids all become part of the surface.

The pot above has a little bird sitting on the rim, which is exactly the sort of finishing touch this method invites. Build yours tall, wide, straight or curved, whatever takes your fancy. It's slow work in the best possible way.

A Lidded Box Worth Keeping Treasures In

Slab work is how you get crisp edges and flat planes out of clay, and a lidded box is the perfect way to learn it. You'll cut your panels, join them square, and make a lid that sits properly rather than nearly. Getting a lid to fit is one of those quiet triumphs.

Then you decorate. The box above has trailing vine scrollwork around every side and a sculpted creature resting on top, all built from thin rolls of clay pressed on by hand. Yours could hold rings, keys, or nothing at all beyond the satisfaction of having made it.

Drape, Shape, and Make It Yours

This week the mould does the hard work of shaping while you concentrate on the decoration. You'll drape a slab of clay over a form, let it settle into a soft even curve, and trim it back to a clean edge. It's a quick, forgiving way to get a bowl you'd be happy to serve from.

Then you make it unmistakably yours. The bowl above has dragonflies resting on the rim with their wings pressed into the clay below, though yours might carry leaves, shells, flowers or a pattern of your own invention. Simple shape, personal detail, lovely result.

Your First Proper Go on the Wheel

This is the week most people are quietly waiting for. You'll get on the wheel, learn to centre a lump of clay, open it out and pull the walls up into a real vessel. Centring is the bit everyone finds tricky and the bit that suddenly clicks.

Expect a few wobbles, and expect to enjoy every minute of it. You'll also make a start on glazing, choosing your colours and finishes and learning how they behave in the kiln. Wet clay, a spinning wheel and hands covered in slip: it's every bit as good as it looks.

Back on the Wheel, Then the Fun of Decorating

A second go on the wheel makes an enormous difference, so this week you'll build on last week and throw with a lot more confidence. Then we move to the part where your piece really becomes yours.

Decorating is where colour finally arrives after weeks of grey clay. You'll learn to load a brush, keep a pattern even around a curved surface, and work a simple repeating motif like the flowers above. Trimming and finishing get their turn too, because a well finished base is what makes a piece look properly made.

Make Something for the Christmas Table

Everything you've learnt this term comes together in one final piece. The tree above is pierced all over so a tealight glows through it, with a star on top and little clay bows pressed onto the sides. It looks properly special once it's lit.

Yours might be a tree, a lantern, a set of decorations or a platter for the big day. You'll use whichever techniques suit your idea, whether that's slab, coil, pinch or wheel. Handmade beats shop bought every single time, especially at Christmas.

Glaze It, Finish It, See the Whole Term Together

The final week is for getting everything properly finished. You'll glaze whatever is still waiting, tidy up bases and edges, and make sure every piece is ready for its last trip to the kiln. Nothing gets left half done.

It's also the week you see the whole term laid out at once, from that first wobbly pinch pot right through to your Christmas piece. Ten weeks of work with your name on it. Your tutor will let you know when the last firings are ready to collect.
