Course Introduction

Forget "Talent"—Let’s Talk About Seeing. Drawing people is often considered the hardest skill to master, but we are here to change that. We have expanded our popular Life Drawing course to include Portrait Studies, giving you a complete toolkit for capturing the human form.

What Makes This Class So Special

Every week you’ll complete a finished sketch — no long projects, no pressure, no experience needed.

We use clothed models to keep things approachable, relevant, and relaxed—focusing on how people actually look in everyday life, dressed and full of character.

"I absolutely love Art on Main! The classes are fantastic, and Beverley is a truly exceptional teacher — incredibly talented, patient, and inspiring. Every session is not only informative but also so much fun.” — Robyn C.

What You’ll Experience Each Week

You will learn to capture gesture, proportion, mood, and likeness with confidence.

We’ll explore charcoal, pencil, and ink in a supportive, judgment-free space where you can find your own expressive style.

Choose your preference from the range of fun classes below.

Term-1: 5th February - 9th April 2026

Week 1

The Secret to Seeing (No Model)

We start by stripping back the myths. Drawing isn't about memorising muscles; it's about seeing shapes. In this first session, we explore the core secrets of observation, simplifying both the human body and the head into basic structures.

You’ll build a strong foundation for both figure drawing and portrait studies right from day one.

Week 2

Capturing Energy & Gesture

Figure Focus

The model arrives! This week is all about movement. Through fast, energetic poses (30 seconds to 2 minutes), you’ll learn to capture the "line of action" and flow of the body.

We’ll also focus on quick head placement, helping you connect the angle of the face to the gesture of the body so they work as one expressive form.

Week 3

Proportion Made Simple

Figure & Head Proportion

"Does that arm look too long?" "Where do the eyes actually go?" This week, we demystify proportion.

You’ll learn simple measuring tricks for the full figure, plus we’ll introduce the "golden rules" of facial proportions—understanding exactly where features sit so your portraits always look structurally sound.

Week 4

The Magic of Foreshortening

Dynamic Figure & Head Angles

Don't fear the difficult angles! Drawing a figure leaning toward you or a head tilted back can be tricky, but we make it simple.

You’ll learn how depth and overlap work, allowing you to draw dynamic limbs and turned faces that feel truly three-dimensional

Week 5

Fabric, Form & Framing the Face

Clothing tells a story. This week, we explore how fabric hangs, folds, and stretches over the body. Crucially, we’ll look at how collars, necklines, and scarves "frame" the portrait, influencing the mood and character of your head-and-shoulder studies.
